Equipment manager has the need for speed
Heath Bronkema, a seven-year GCSAA member and golf course equipment manager at Kalamazoo (Mich.) Country Club is living life to the fullest. Bronkema is racing stock cars, playing guitar and finds extra time to coach his daughter's soccer team. He can be found Fridays at the Kalamazoo Speedway and another 150 nights a year playing in the band Bronk Bros. with GCSAA board member John Fulling, CGCS. Submit a Distinguished Service Award nomination by July 31
Nominations are now open for the 2016 Col. John Morley Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the golf course superintendent's profession. Individuals must be nominated by a GCSAA member, an affiliated chapter or a qualified golf association. Nominations are due July 31, and winners will receive their DSAs at the 2017 Golf Industry Show in Orlando.
GCM staff earn top writing and design awards
The 2016 Capital Budget and Labor Survey Report is now available to GCSAA Class A, B, ISM and C members. Among the findings, average capital spending for an 18-hole course was $128,144, a 33.6 percent increase over the 2013 survey.
New Rules for Overtime Pay
On May 18, the Department of Labor finalized a rule that increases the salary threshold from $23,660 to $47,476 at which employees have to be paid overtime. On Dec. 1, individuals who earn salaries of less than $47,476 a year will qualify for overtime pay of time-and-a-half if they work more than 40 hours a week.
